What Are Mosquitoes?
Mosquitoes are small flying insects notorious for their persistent biting and tendency to carry deadly diseases.
They are born of eggs hatched in water, but spend their adult lives on land (except for the female’s brief return to water to lay her eggs).
Their life span is short, usually just two to three weeks for females and even less for males.
Females seek blood to assist with egg development, and in extracting that blood from an animal or human source they inject a small amount of saliva that is often responsible for the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses.
These diseases include dengue fever, Australian encephalitis, Ross River Virus Disease, and several others.
Common Types of Mosquitoes
While there are over three hundred species of mosquitoes in Australia, only a few of them are especially concerning.<
-
Aedes Aegypti Mosquito
Also known as the dengue mosquito in Queensland, this tropical species is the main carrier of dengue fever, Zika, and yellow fever. Its bites are often unnoticeable when they happen, but can have deadly consequences.
-
Aedes Normanensis
Known to multiply after seasonal rains in dry areas, this species can be a major pest and carry several diseases.
-
Aedes Sagax
Known to be a major pest after seasonal flooding.
Signs of Infestation
he most common sign of an infestation is the visible mosquitoes flying about inside or outside your home.
They are most active at night, but you might also see them in the evening as the sun is setting. The appearance of mosquito bites on your body is another sign of infestation.
The bites are often round and itchy, and are often noticed in the morning after having appeared during the night.
How to Control
-
Eliminate Breeding Sites
Mosquitoes breed in stagnant pools of water, so be sure you don’t have any such pools around your home. Overturn and wipe any containers or tarps that have pooled up after rain, and store such things inside to avoid future pooling.
-
Insect Spray
You can buy insect spray and then apply it to the dark areas inside your home. Try under furniture and behind shelves to rid your space of this nasty pest. Be sure to spray safely, without children present.
