What are fleas?

They are tiny wingless parasites known as the ctenocephalides felis. The body is brown oval shaped and they area round 2 to 4 mm in length.

The bite can leaving itchy and painful welts behind. Being wingless they travel by jumping.

Once you have a flea problem, it can be difficult to eradicate them without the right treatment. Throughout Queensland, there are quite a few common types of fleas.

The cat flea is the most common type of flea in Australia. While you may find the dog flea or human flea, they’re relatively rare.

The cat flea, despite its name, can still bite dogs and people. A cat flea is brownish-black and laterally flattened. They will become dark black once they have bitten and are filled with blood.

What are ticks?

Ticks, similarly, are small bugs that can be difficult to see. They’re eight-legged and are related to spiders.

They feed on the blood of animals, including you and any other animals in the house.

Some ticks can also lead to diseases, including Lyme disease. The health of your family is a good enough reason to get a tick control expert to fix the infestation.

There are 70 tick species found throughout Australia. This includes 56 hard ticks and 14 soft ticks. 16 of the species are capable of feeding on humans.

Most have a pill-shaped body and are brown to black in colour. The cattle tick and bush tick are the most common ones that you’ll deal with, but you may find others depending on where you are in Queensland.

Signs of an Infestation

If you have an infestation of fleas and/or ticks, you will likely know it because of the bites appearing on you and your pets.

With fleas, you may notice:

• Visible hopping of flees
• Dots on the fur of your animals
• You or your pets scratching excessively

With ticks, you may notice:

• Visible ticks latching onto clothing or skin
• Medical issues as a result of being bitten, including rashes, fever, or chills
